Do you ask yourself how often should you change your toothbrush? If so, then take a look at your toothbrush. Are the bristles intact, or are they frayed, bent, or broken.
It is recommended that you change your toothbrush once every four months if you brush your teeth twice a day. However, many people do not change their toothbrushes. As a result, the broken bristles can no longer help keep your teeth clean, and all the effort you put in brushing your teeth goes to waste. On the other hand, even though you are brushing your teeth, the amount of plaque and tartar in your mouth stays the same. Hence your mouth remains at risk from cavities and infection.
Sometimes, due to pressure upon the bristles and regular usage, the toothbrush head may turn ragged. Using such a toothbrush may scrape down enamel and weaken the gums. There are recesses and fine spaces where a lot of plaque and tartar are accumulated. If the bristles are bent or broken, such fine space can no longer be cleaned. Eventually, the plaque hidden beyond reach in such recesses causes cavities that lead to tooth loss if not treated.
Another reason for changing your toothbrush every few months is that toothbrushes can get contaminated with bacteria very quickly. It can get spoiled if you are placing them near wet areas. While you can rinse your toothbrush with water to clean it, many bacteria still remain on your toothbrush and can enter your mouth easily. Changing your toothbrush once every few months protects your mouth from coming in contact with a contaminated toothbrush.
